In early June, we were in need of an escape. We both miss Wisconsin and were in search of a lake, fish fry and Murphy’s first family adventure! We found all of that and more in Manitowish Waters, Wisconsin. If you search “the life” in the dictionary, I’m fairly certain this is what pops up! Read all the way to the bottom for a closer look at this true gem of a place that we stayed, Alderwood Resort. Here are my takeaways of our amazing getaway!
Happy Hour at The Lodge Murphy’s first hotel The Dixie’s View The Lodge at Manitowish Waters // We stayed here for our first two nights. We were very impressed with the friendliness of staff [hello Northern Wisconsin!], the quaintness, the dog-friendly accommodations and the socially distant and wonderful complimentary breakfast! We cannot recommend this hotel enough! Downtown Manitowish Waters The backyard patio was perfect for our very own private happy hour. The Lodge at Manitowish Waters – The Lodge is right in the little downtown of Manitowish Waters. Right down the road was a BIG favorite of ours, Dixie’s Coffeehouse. The view was absolutely incredible, a variety of seating [including patio lounge seating, work tables, picnic tables to these adironack chairs overlooking the water!] I fell in love with this place. For next time, we plan to bring our bikes as there were miles of paved trails in this area! The WinMan Trails came highly recommended and we did take a stroll on one trail. We will make more time for that next time. Several mountain bikers were there which looked pretty cool.
Little Bohemia Supper Club Pea Patch takeout for date night at the park! Cooking at the cabin with a little helper Wednesday fish fry at Little Bohemia Lodge // BEST fish fry we’ve had! [that says a lot] Food Highlights: Little Bohemia Lodge Pizza & Cheese Curds from Pea Patch Saloon[and take to the lakefront park across the street!] Pea Patch Salon
“The Pontoon can hold 14 people…yeah that shouldn’t be a problem” Home of the Manitowish Waters chain of lakes! Drive the boat up to pick up your pizza at Pea Patch Saloon! We had a blast renting a pontoon for the day from Greer’s Pier. The pontoon was $250 for the day [including rental + tax + gas] and it was fun to rent when my parents came up for the day! The chain of lakes was super quiet [It was a week day AND things were still quieter with you know, the pandemic]. It was such a fun activity! They also rent speed boats. Greer’s Pier
Suspension Bridge at Black River Harbor on Lake Superior
If you want to head NORTH to the Upper Peninsula and Lake Superior – we loved incorporating this into our week. Along the short drive north, we stopped at THREE waterfalls. Potawatomi and Gorge Falls [they share the same parking lot] and Rainbow Falls [beautiful views!!] All had parking lots and then just a short [under a half mile] walk to the waterfalls. The stairs were steep but the views were well worth it. We packed a picnic to enjoy at Black River Harbor. This adorable park was filled with beautiful lake views, a suspension bridge and a beach! A short jaunt away is Porcupine Mountains which is a beautiful state park that you can drive or hike up and visit Lake of the Clouds! Before you get into the park, you are driving along Lake Superior itself. There were several areas to park alongside the road. We pulled in and took a blanket down by the water to experience the lake up close and personal. Potawatomi and Gorge Falls Rainbow Falls Black River Harbor Porcupine Mountains
Bearskin Trail Beautiful Minocqua Minocqua Brewing Co. Downtown Minocqua is fun to browse around too and was a great pit stop on our way north! [It’s 20-25 minutes south of Manitowish Waters!] Home to a beautiful lake, adorable shops, good restaurants and more! Minocqua, Wisconsin You can get on the Bearskin trail right from downtown Minocqua. The first two bridges you walk over are quite pretty and have a view of the lake. We sat in the outdoor patio for dinner at Minocqua Brewing Company. It has a beautiful setting right on the lake and food and beer were great. Highly recommend! Just a few minutes down the road, if you need dessert, stop at What’s the Scoop! One thing we did not get to try out because we didn’t have time was Rocky Reef Brewery. We were excited to experience this dog friendly, outdoor patio, and spacious tap room. Maverick’s was a recommended Mexican restaurant to grab some take out and bring with you to the brewery. It’s hard to say no to that combo! Next time for sure.
// Alderwood Resort Seasonal & Year-Round Lodging in Manitowish Waters, Wisconsin
Well hello Alderwood Resort. We loved you instantly upon our arrival! Now, before I go talking this place up to the highest level, know that it fills.up.fast. Alderwood is so amazing that they have such a high rate of returning guests and a system where once you stay, you get first dibs at those dates next year, which I think is so smart. We were so happy to find out that two of their cabins [out of four] can be rented as pet-friendly accommodations in the early and late seasons of the year! We may be looking into fall dates [which are almost ALL full!] This is everything that came included in our stay at Alderwood Resort: Kayaks, canoes, row boats, firewood, campfire pit with high quality adironack chairs, your very own pier where you can dock a boat during your stay, [or you know, have a solo afternoon with a book, wine and guac], a stock of books and games, blankets for the campfire, and a well stocked kitchen! The Beachview Cabin where we stayed was located right next to a playground and the little beach/swimming area. Would be so perfect for families! Check it out here. The special touches // I love a warm welcome. Alderwood greeted us with a bag of coffee, a gift card for a coffee at Dixie’s [heart eyes!], doggie bags & a few milk bones and a binder FULL of information on the area! They also have a little camp store with the cutest little items. Twist my arm with all the soy candles, especially if one is named “It’s 5 o’clock somewhere” and is pineapple and rum flavored! We cannot recommend Alderwood Resort enough and are SO thankful to Northern Wisconsin for welcoming us in with open arms! Until next time.
The Fitzpatricks give this trip FIVE stars! 10/10. A+. All of the above!
